The Deep Well

The hole is deep.

The hole is dark and foreboding.

It dares anyone to enter.

Everybody wants to look upwards and ignore the hole.

Walk around it, go another way.

Stay as far away as possible.

The hole is our past.

Each layer of sediment contains the pain and hurts we have encountered.

In them lie anger, shame, resentment, fear, numbness, and the list goes on.

We have kept moving through life by keeping them hidden and forgotten.

However, to truly live the life God wants for us, we must look.

We must explore.

We must bravely enter.

Over the years the layers have been used as protection for our heart.

We had to survive after all.

We had to put on a good face.

We had to bury the pain and move forward.

But we know it is there, even though it has now become a dull knowing.

Once we forge the courage, we enter.

The candle of Truth illuminates the walls.

Lower and lower, truth is revealed.

We see the pain, hear the lies we believed, feel.

Despite the darkness, we feel peace.

Despite the darkness, we for once have clarity.

For in the dark and the pain and the fear, Jesus is there.

This well provides the living water that refreshes our souls.

This water quenches our ever-longing thirst and quells our darkest secrets.

At our core, our very deep hidden core,

Jesus loves us.

He has been here through every breath we have taken.

He has held us when we were scared.

He has wiped away tears in the pain.

He assures us that we belong to Him.

And knowing this, we can finally, finally, finally rest.

PRM – 10/9/20

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water springing up to eternal life.”  John 4:14
